MSM attends House of Commons

ADS Parliamentary reception in the Members Dining Room,House of Commons

On the 11th July, Sam Ireland, Manufacturing Engineer and Dick Martin, Chairman, represented MSM at a reception to recognise the importance of apprenticeships in the aerospace and defence industry. It gave all industry attendees the opportunity to discuss with their local MPs the need for change in the current system and the removal of the Apprenticeship Levy.

Dick and Sam met MSM's local MP, Liz McInnes (Labour MP for Heywood and Middleton) and a neighbouring MP, Andrew Gwynne (Labour MP for Denton and Reddish). Whilst sympathetic to the problem, the levy was put in place through legislation so removal of the levy must follow the same route. As everyone in Parliament is currently focussing on Brexit, it’s not expected to happen soon.

Liz McInnes has accepted an invitation to visit MSM in early September to witness for herself how manufacturing is alive and prospering in the region and how training and apprenticeships are vitally important to our industry.

Sam recently graduated from the BAE Systems School of Engineering with flying colours, having begun his modern apprenticeship at MSM in 2014.
