Celebrating National Apprenticeships Week 2025: The Future of Aerospace Engineering

As we mark National Apprenticeships Week 2025, the team at MSM would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the invaluable role apprentices play in our industry. From learning advanced manufacturing techniques to mastering the precision required for aerospace engineering, apprenticeships provide a gateway for the next generation of skilled professionals to innovate in this dynamic sector.

The Role of Apprentices in Aerospace
Aerospace manufacturing demands a high level of expertise, with rigorous standards and cutting-edge technologies shaping the industry. Mike Rothwell, Operations Director at MSM aerospace fabricators comments “We currently employ 9 apprentices at MSM, all studying Level 3 Metal Fabricator at Hopwood Hall College in Middleton. They bring fresh perspectives, energy, and enthusiasm whilst gaining hands-on experience and training in the complex fabrication of metals. Their contributions not only support day-to-day operations but also help drive continuous improvement and efficiency. MSM is certainly proud to champion the next generation of skilled apprentices, and we look forward to supporting their continued development.”

Bridging the Skills Gap
The aerospace sector faces a growing demand for skilled workers, making apprenticeships more important than ever. MSM is committed to the long-term investment in apprenticeship programs. We recognise the importance of cultivating a workforce with the specialised skills needed to maintain our position as a leader in aerospace innovation and engineering. The apprenticeship programs ensure knowledge is transferred from MSM’s experienced team to the younger talent, safeguarding the company’s future and demonstrating that apprenticeships are not just an entry point but a foundation for long-term success.
Unlike traditional academic routes, apprenticeships combine classroom learning with real-workplace application. This combination allows apprentices to gain practical experience and achieve industry-recognised qualifications. As a result, they develop expertise in advanced techniques such as CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and non-destructive testing—critical skills that support the aerospace sector.

Here’s what some of our apprentices have to say –
“Learning on the job has been an amazing experience, every day brings new challenges, and I’m excited to keep advancing in my role”
“The combination of working on-site at MSM and attending college once a week really suits me, as I prefer to learn through practical hands-on experience, so an apprenticeship is the perfect fit for me”
“I really enjoy working with and learning from different members of the team who have been working in engineering for many years. Their shared knowledge and skill has been invaluable to me as I progress my career in aerospace”

As we celebrate National Apprenticeships Week 2025, we recognise the dedication of apprentices, the commitment of training providers, and the forward-thinking companies that invest in talent development. The aerospace industry’s future depends on a steady pipeline of skilled professionals, and apprenticeships remain one of the most effective ways to secure that future.
MSM will be attending the Apprenticeships Open Event at Hopwood Hall on Wednesday February 12th, we look forward to seeing you there Apprenticeships Open Event – Wednesday 12th February 2025 – Hopwood Hall College and University Centre
